HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Edward
4"Ed" Sadlowski, who passed away on June 10, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Ed Sadlowski was a union activist and represented
6thousands of steelworkers in Chicago and Gary, Indiana; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Ed Sadlowski was born into a steelworker family on
8September 10, 1938 and grew up in the southeast side's South
9Chicago neighborhood, watching his father organize at the
10Inland Steel Company; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Ed Sadlowski earned the nickname "Oilcan Eddie"
12while following in his father's footsteps as a union organizer
13and working as a machinist at United States Steel South Works
14in 1956; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Ed Sadlowski worked his way up to the top position
16with the site's union in 1964, overseeing approximately 23,000
17workers; and
 
18    WHEREAS, In 1975, with the platform "Steelworkers Fight
19Back", Ed Sadlowski became president of United Steelworkers
20District 31, its largest region, encompassing 128,000 members

1in Chicago and Gary; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Ed Sadlowski became a district union chief with
3United Steelworkers in 1977, gaining national attention as an
4insurgent during a bid for the union presidency; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Ed Sadlowski championed
6workers' right to strike and to ratify their own contracts; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Ed Sadlowski served on the local panel of the
8Illinois Labor Relations Board from 1993 to 2012; he was
9inducted into the Illinois Labor History Society's Union Hall
10of Honor in 2012; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Ed Sadlowski was the voice of the working class
12and gave power to the men and women who work in the trenches in
13rank-and-file positions; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Ed Sadlowski worked his whole life for the ideals
15of trade unionism, creating a profound and lasting influence
16throughout all of organized labor; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Ed Sadlowski is survived by his wife, Marlene; his
18children, Chicago Alderman Susan Sadlowski Garza, Patricia
19Hoyt, Edward Sadlowski Jr., and Diane Agelson; 11
20grandchildren; and two great grandchildren; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
2HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
3mourn the passing of Edward "Ed" Sadlowski, and extend our
4sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew
5and loved him; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Ed Sadlowski as an expression of our
8deepest sympathy and sincerest appreciation for his life's work
9and achievements.
