HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Daniel J. Callahan, who passed away on March 27, 2017; and

WHEREAS, Daniel Callahan was born in Montgomery to Daniel J. Sr. and Evelyn (Yoesle) Callahan on November 24, 1934; he was raised in Morris and attended Immaculate Conception School and St. Bede Academy; he graduated from Marquette High School in 1952 and enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1955, where he served for four years; he married JoAnn Olson on June 28, 1958 and they began their life together in Rapid City, South Dakota, before returning to Morris; and

WHEREAS, Daniel Callahan worked for the United States Army Corps of Engineers as Lock Master at Dresden Island Lock and Dam until his retirement in 1989; he achieved the position of Lock Master in 1971 at the age of 36, the youngest Lock Master to do so; and

WHEREAS, Daniel Callahan worked for the Grundy County Sheriff's office, first as a road deputy; most recently, he worked in court security; he was one of the longest-employed member of the sheriff's office, serving 43 years when he retired in January of 2014; and

WHEREAS, Daniel Callahan served as police commissioner of the City of Morris from 1998 to 2017; and

WHEREAS, Daniel Callahan was an avid fisherman; he enjoyed woodworking, refinishing antiques, gardening, canning, and making preserves; and

WHEREAS, Daniel Callahan was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Margaret Jean Callahan; and his brother, Charles Eugene Callahan; and

WHEREAS, Daniel Callahan is survived by his wife, JoAnn; his children, Karen Jean (Mike) Doughan, Kevin Michael (Colleen) Callahan, and Kenneth James (Pamela) Callahan; his granddaughters, Amy (Josh) Clark, Stephanie (Jeffrey) Barcelona, and Lindsey Doughan; and his great-granddaughters, Callahan Marie and Madeline Louise Clark; and his nephew, Michael Callahan; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Daniel J. Callahan, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Daniel Callahan as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
