| 2 | | WHEREAS, The week of January 29 through February 4, 2017 | 3 | | was designated as National Catholic
Schools Week by the United | 4 | | States House of Representatives to recognize the contribution | 5 | | of
Catholic education to families and communities across the | 6 | | nation; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, There are 570 Catholic private schools in the | 8 | | State of Illinois, serving 160,419 students
statewide, | 9 | | including 83 High Schools, 438 Elementary Schools, and 322 | 10 | | Preschools; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Catholic schools instill a broad, high-quality | 12 | | education for students, emphasizing the
lifelong development | 13 | | of moral, intellectual, physical, and social values; and | 14 | | WHEREAS, Catholic schools serve our communities by | 15 | | providing a diverse student population from
all socio-economic | 16 | | backgrounds a strong academic and moral foundation; enrollment | 17 | | nationwide
includes 20.3% racial minorities, 16.1% | 18 | | Hispanic/Latino, and 17.4% non-Catholic; and | 19 | | WHEREAS, Catholic schools offer an affordable education | 20 | | option for parents, including those in
underserved urban areas; | 21 | | and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, The Catholic high school graduation rate | 2 | | nationwide is 99%, with 87% of
graduates attending four-year | 3 | | colleges; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, National Catholic Schools Week was first | 5 | | established in 1974 and has been
celebrated on the national | 6 | | level annually for the past 43 years; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, The theme for National Catholic Schools Week 2017 | 8 | | is "Catholic Schools: Communities
of Faith, Knowledge, and | 9 | | Service"; therefore, be it
| 10 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 11 | | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | 12 | | declare the week of January 29 through February 4, 2017 as
| 13 | | Catholic Schools Week in the State of Illinois; and be it | 14 | | further | 15 | | RESOLVED, That we support the continued dedication of
| 16 | | Catholic schools, students, parents, and teachers throughout | 17 | | the state toward academic
excellence, and a bright future for | 18 | | Illinois youth.
