SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Steve D. Spurgetis of Moline, who passed
4away on August 20, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Steve Spurgetis was born in Lexington, Nebraska on
6April 29, 1933 to James C. and Nikoletta Kasteliotis Spurgetis;
7he served in the United States Army during the Korean War from
81953 to 1955, stationed in Germany; he married Margit
9Lagerquist on September 8, 1963 in Moline; and
 
10    WHEREAS, In July of 1956, Steve Spurgetis joined the Moline
11Fire Department (MFD); after 27 years of dedicated service, he
12retired as Captain of Station 2; following his retirement, he
13served as the President of the Fire Department Pension Fund,
14the first President of the fire department retirees, a charter
15member of the Illinois Association of Retired Fire Fighters of
16Illinois, and a past officer at MFD Local 581; he was
17instrumental in creating the MFD memorial at Ben Butterworth to
18honor deceased fire fighters of Moline; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Steve Spurgetis served in many capacities at
20various organizations; he was the Secretary Treasurer and later
21President of the Moline Municipal Credit Union; and

1    WHEREAS, Steve Spurgetis was a member of Moline Veterans of
2Foreign Wars 2130 and Moline American Legion Post 246; he
3served on the board of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, where
4he was a member; he also belonged to Rock Island Elks 980, the
5Viking Club, and the Illinois Association Of Retired Fire
6Fighters; he enjoyed golf, fishing, gardening, and crossword
7puzzles; he helped the fire department, city employees, and
8retirees to prepare and deliver food baskets to the needy each
9Thanksgiving; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Steve Spurgetis was preceded in death by his wife,
11Margit; his parents; his 2 brothers; and 1 sister; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Steve Spurgetis is survived by his stepdaughter,
13Sharon (Tony) Holmes; his grandchildren, Tony (Kelly) Holmes,
14Jr., Nicole Holmes, and Heather Holmes; his
15great-grandchildren, Tony Holmes, Bryce Holmes, Alyssa Holmes,
16Lucas Richards, Janalee Richards, and Braxton Anthony; his
17great-great-grandchildren, Anthony Steven Joseph Holmes, III,
18Kaydyn Holmes, and Jordan Holmes; his sister, Mary Spurgetis;
19and many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
21ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
22Steve D. Spurgetis, and extend our sincere condolences to his
23family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it

2    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3presented to the family of Steve Spurgetis as an expression of
4our deepest sympathy.
