SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Steve D. Spurgetis of Moline, who passed away on August 20, 2015; and

WHEREAS, Steve Spurgetis was born in Lexington, Nebraska on April 29, 1933 to James C. and Nikoletta Kasteliotis Spurgetis; he served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1953 to 1955, stationed in Germany; he married Margit Lagerquist on September 8, 1963 in Moline; and

WHEREAS, In July of 1956, Steve Spurgetis joined the Moline Fire Department (MFD); after 27 years of dedicated service, he retired as Captain of Station 2; following his retirement, he served as the President of the Fire Department Pension Fund, the first President of the fire department retirees, a charter member of the Illinois Association of Retired Fire Fighters of Illinois, and a past officer at MFD Local 581; he was instrumental in creating the MFD memorial at Ben Butterworth to honor deceased fire fighters of Moline; and

WHEREAS, Steve Spurgetis served in many capacities at various organizations; he was the Secretary Treasurer and later President of the Moline Municipal Credit Union; and

WHEREAS, Steve Spurgetis was a member of Moline Veterans of Foreign Wars 2130 and Moline American Legion Post 246; he served on the board of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, where he was a member; he also belonged to Rock Island Elks 980, the Viking Club, and the Illinois Association Of Retired Fire Fighters; he enjoyed golf, fishing, gardening, and crossword puzzles; he helped the fire department, city employees, and retirees to prepare and deliver food baskets to the needy each Thanksgiving; and

WHEREAS, Steve Spurgetis was preceded in death by his wife, Margit; his parents; his 2 brothers; and 1 sister; and

WHEREAS, Steve Spurgetis is survived by his stepdaughter, Sharon (Tony) Holmes; his grandchildren, Tony (Kelly) Holmes, Jr., Nicole Holmes, and Heather Holmes; his great-grandchildren, Tony Holmes, Bryce Holmes, Alyssa Holmes, Lucas Richards, Janalee Richards, and Braxton Anthony; his great-great-grandchildren, Anthony Steven Joseph Holmes, III, Kaydyn Holmes, and Jordan Holmes; his sister, Mary Spurgetis; and many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Steve D. Spurgetis, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Steve Spurgetis as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
