| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of John Timmes of Peoria, who passed away on | 4 | | July 27, 2015; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, John Timmes was born in Jackson, Mississippi on | 6 | | February 19, 1925 to Charley and Ophelia (Rembert) Timmes; he
| 7 | | married Kathryn Williams on August 11, 1956 in Ashland, | 8 | | Kentucky; he was educated in the Jackson, Mississippi school | 9 | | system and was a United States Army veteran, serving from 1943 | 10 | | to 1945 during World War II; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, John Timmes began a long career in law enforcement | 12 | | in 1958 as a patrolman in the Peoria Police
Department; he was | 13 | | promoted to Sergeant in 1966 and worked in the juvenile
and | 14 | | civic affairs division for the next 16 years;
he and his | 15 | | partner and long-time friend, George Shadid, were the first | 16 | | integrated
partners on Peoria's police force; and | 17 | | WHEREAS, after retiring from the police department, John | 18 | | Timmes worked security at Caterpillar, Inc., as head of
| 19 | | security at the Peoria Civic Center, and at Peoria School | 20 | | District 150, serving Manual High School and Trewyn Middle | 21 | | School; he provided security for the Carver Community Center | 22 | | and at the Riverplex as a Peoria

| 1 | | until his final retirement in 2005; and | 2 | | WHEREAS, John Timmes was named Peoria Policeman of the Year | 3 | | in 1970 and was inducted into the Peoria
African-American Hall | 4 | | of Fame Museum in 2000; his many other awards include the
| 5 | | Lifetime Service Award from the Peoria Afro-American Police | 6 | | League in 2006; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, John Timmes was an avid tennis player who won many | 8 | | city tournaments with his favorite partner, Dr.
James Stafford; | 9 | | he served on the board of directors of the Carver Community | 10 | | Center and was a member of
the Bradley University Omega Psi Phi | 11 | | Fraternity, the Tri-County Urban League Guild, and Bethel
| 12 | | United Methodist Church; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, John Timmes was preceded in death by his parents; | 14 | | his daughter, Janique Timmes; his brother, Elbert Timmes; his | 15 | | niece, Joan Timmes; and his nephew, Milton Timmes; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, John Timmes is survived by his wife, Kathryn
W. | 17 | | Timmes; his daughters, Johnna N. Timmes and Carolyn Collins; | 18 | | his sisters, Doris (Walter) Nelson and Ida B. Kelly;
his | 19 | | nephews, Charles (Valerie) Timmes and Vanness Nelson; his | 20 | | nieces,
Cynthia Long and Patricia Timmes; his great-niece, | 21 | | Brittany (Steve) Graves;
his great-nephew, Trenton N. Timmes; | 22 | | and a host of other family and friends; therefore, be it

| 1 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | 2 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 3 | | John Timmes, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, | 4 | | friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
| 5 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 6 | | presented to the family of John Timmes as an expression of our | 7 | | deepest sympathy.
