SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Paul J. Dunn, M.D. of Oak Park, who
4passed away on March 24, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Dunn was born in Newport, Kentucky on October
627, 1919 to Florence (nee Brill) and William C. Dunn; he
7received his high school diploma from Covington (Ky.) Latin
8School at the age of 15 and then took college classes provided
9for Latin School graduates; he joined the United States Navy in
101942; he was transferred to the Marines and served in the 28th
11Infantry Regiment of the Fifth Marine Division in the months
12prior to the invasion of Iwo Jima; following the war, he
13studied at Xavier University in Cincinnati before being
14admitted to Loyola University Medical School in Chicago,
15graduating in 1951; he did post-graduate studies at Harvard
16Medical School and then returned to Xavier to complete his
17undergraduate degree in 1955; he married Kathryn in 1951; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Dr. Dunn was a retired pediatrician, a pioneer of
19Montessori education in the United States, and an early and
20leading national advocate of preventive and holistic
21approaches to medical care; he and his wife founded the Alcuin
22Montessori School in Oak Park in 1961, which has been operating
23continuously for 54 years; he served on the board of trustees

1of the American Montessori Society from 1962 to 1965, as
2President of Alcuin's board of directors, and was a co-founder
3with his wife of the Illinois Montessori Society; in 1967, due
4to his interest in treating brain-injured children, he
5co-founded the Chicago Center for the Achievement of Human
6Potential and served as its medical director; he also founded
7the Center for Integrative Treatment and Biochemical Nutrition
8in Oak Park; he served as President of the International
9Academy of Preventive Medicine from 1979 to 1980, as a member
10of the Illinois Commission on Children from 1977 to 1981, as
11Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the Stritch
12School of Medicine at Loyola University, and on the staffs of
13St. Anne, Oak Park, Loretto, and West Suburban hospitals; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Dr. Dunn was preceded in death by his parents; his
153 brothers, Edward, Jack, and Bill Dunn; and his sister, Mary
16Zaffiro; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Dr. Dunn is survived by his wife, Kathryn; his
18children, Chris (Beth) Dunn, Brian (Deb) Dunn, Paul Dunn, Jr.,
19Peter Dunn, Michael Dunn, Mark (Ann) Dunn, John (Alexa) Dunn,
20Sarah Dunn, Jeff Dunn, and Julie Dunn; his 9 grandchildren,
21Zeke Dunn, Molly Dunn, Kelly Barnd, Jacob Barnd, Jack Dunn,
22Patrick Dunn, Katie Dunn, Ian Dunn, and Raleigh Dunn; and other
23relatives and many friends; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
3Paul J. Dunn, M.D., and extend our sincere condolences to his
4family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
5further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Dr. Dunn as an expression of our
8deepest sympathy.
