SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of James Mantice, who passed away at the age of 92; and

WHEREAS, James Mantice served as a United States Army combat infantryman with the 102nd division in Germany, where he was awarded the Bronze Star; and

WHEREAS, James Mantice spent 40 years in advertising; he told friends that his proudest moment was the day he severed all ties with a popular cigarette account on the grounds that tobacco was a "toxic and nasty business"; and

WHEREAS, James Mantice was devoted to his family, books, and the study of Haiku; his first two volumes made their way to Haiku circles in Japan, where they were warmly received; he was a member of the St. Nectarios Greek Orthodox Church; and

WHEREAS, James Mantice was preceded in death by his brother, Tom and his sister, Ann; and

WHEREAS, James Mantice is survived by his wife, Mimi; his son, Peter; his sister, Bess Mermigas; his stepchildren, Greg and Lynne Tipsword, David and Diane Rosso, Matthew Rosso, John and Christine Frangoulis, and George and Diane Rogers; and his grandchildren, Douglas, Amanda, Mitchell, Katie, Hannah, and Michael, who affectionately called him "Papou"; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of James Mantice, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of James Mantice as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
