SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Louis B. Garippo of Glenview, who passed away on May 31, 2016; and

WHEREAS, Louis Garippo was born in Chicago and grew up in the Galewood neighborhood on Chicago's northwest side; he attended Fenwick High School, the University of Notre Dame, and DePaul University Law School; and

WHEREAS, Louis Garippo served two years in the United States Army before he followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, Benjamin Adamowski, and joined the Cook County State's Attorney's Office in 1958 as an Assistant State's Attorney; he handled high-profile cases such as the 1960 Summerdale police scandal and the Guido-Yonder torture and burglary case in 1962; two years after he became Chief of the Criminal Division in 1964, he was named First Assistant State's Attorney and was assigned to assist in other high-profile cases, including the trial of Richard Speck; and

WHEREAS, Louis Garippo became a Cook County Circuit Court judge in 1968; in 1970, he set precedent by ruling State laws allowing subpoenas for journalists and their notes as unconstitutional; he also presided over the 1980 trial of John Wayne Gacy; and

WHEREAS, After 12 years as a judge, following the Gacy trial, Louis Garippo entered into private practice, where he was still involved in high-profile issues; he provided legal counsel for Chicago Teamsters' leader, Daniel Ligurotis, who in 1992 was acquitted of fatally shooting his son; he was selected in 2000 to research public opinion concerning the retention of Chief Illiniwek as a mascot for the University of Illinois; and

WHEREAS, Louis Garippo received numerous awards and recognitions for his integrity and prudence, including the Justice Leadership Award from Treatment Alternatives for Safe Communities and the Accipiter Award from Fenwick High School; he earned the highest rating of any trial judge in surveys administered by the Chicago Bar Association; and

WHEREAS, Louis Garippo is survived by his wife, Colette; his daughters, Ellen and Mary; his son, Tom; his five grandchildren; and his sister, Anna Maria Sciaraffa; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Louis B. Garippo, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Louis Garippo as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
