SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of one of its former colleagues, Vivian Veach Hickey, who passed away on April 28, 2016 in Marin County, California; and

WHEREAS, Senator Vivian Hickey, a daughter of western Illinois, received a bachelor's degree from Rockford College and a master's degree in dramatic arts from the University of North Carolina before settling in Rockford; and

WHEREAS, Senator Vivian Hickey married Francis E. Hickey, a prominent attorney in Rockford, with whom she raised three sons; and

WHEREAS, Senator Vivian Hickey was active in the civic and cultural life of Rockford, especially in the League of Women Voters, Rock Valley College, Rockford College, and the Democratic Party; and

WHEREAS, In May of 1974, Senator Vivian Hickey was appointed to fill the 34th District Senate seat vacated by the death of Senator Betty Ann Southwick Keegan; she was elected to that seat in November of 1974; and

WHEREAS, Senator Vivian Hickey served the people of Rockford and Illinois faithfully and with distinction during her terms in the Illinois State Senate from 1974 to 1979, always promoting transparency and civility in government and with the goal of making Illinois a better place to live for future generations; and

WHEREAS, After her retirement from the Senate in 1979, Senator Vivian Hickey continued to be active in public life in Rockford until she retired to Marin County, California; and

WHEREAS, Senator Vivian Hickey celebrated her 100th birthday on March 25, 2016, in the knowledge that she had served her community well and had earned the admiration and affection of her family, friends, and the people of Illinois; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we expresses our appreciation for the life of Senator Vivian Veach Hickey and offer our sincere condolences to her family and friends, as well as the citizens of Rockford; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Senator Vivian Hickey as an expression of our sympathy.
