HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Veterans Day is a public holiday that is dedicated
3to honoring those who have served in the United States Armed
4Forces; the day was declared a holiday by President Woodrow
5Wilson in 1919; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The holiday was originally known as Armistice Day;
7the date of November 11 was chosen as the official date in
8reference to the armistice that ended World War I; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Armistice Day officially became Veterans Day in
101954; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Illinois has the 10th largest veteran population
12in the United States; Illinois veterans have proven themselves
13worthy time and time again by serving in several of the
14nation's toughest and most difficult assignments with bravery
15and valor; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Veterans Day is an official Illinois State holiday
17for government employees; most federal workers are given the
18day off and there is no mail service in the United States on
19this day; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE

1NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
2urge all employers in the State of Illinois to provide each
3employee who is a veteran with paid or unpaid time off for
4Veterans Day, November 11, if the employee would otherwise be
5required to work on that day.
