HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the passing of Joyce
4Marie Haywood Ewell, who passed away on April 4, 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell was born on September 29, 1932; her
6parents were Anthony Rudolph Haywood and Inez Baker Haywood;
7she married Raymond Whitney Ewell on September 14, 1953; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell was raised in Chicago, attended McCosh
9Elementary School, and graduated from Englewood High School in
101950; she continued to pursue her education and received a
11bachelor's degree in education from Chicago Teachers College in
121960 and a master's degree from DePaul University in 1969; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell was a member of St. Edmunds Episcopal
14Church; she later became a devoted member and lay minister of
15Messiah-St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church, where she served as
16the first female Senior Warden; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell started her teaching career at the
18Chicago Public Schools; she later worked with the City Colleges
19of Chicago, where she advanced to the position of
20Vice-President of Olive Harvey College, and continued to teach
21at Malcolm X College until she retired in 2000; and

1    WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell was a faithful member of Alpha Kappa
2Alpha Sorority Inc., Theta Omega Chapter; she also was a member
3of the Woodlawn Organization and the Women of S.I.C.K.; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell loved to travel, hang out with her
5friends in Acapulco, Mexico and Union Pier, Michigan, and visit
6her family in Denver, Colorado; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell was preceded in death by her parents
8and her younger sister, Jean Haywood Byrd; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell is survived by her sons, Raymond, Marc
10Whitney, and Raymond Anthony "Tony"; her grandsons, Kendal,
11Cameron, Kareim, Marc Jr., and Ray; her great-grandson, Silas;
12her niece, Lynette Byrd Norman; her step-sister, Carolyn
13Haywood Lee; and her many other relatives and friends;
14therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
16NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
17we, along with all who knew and loved her, mourn the passing of
18Joyce Marie Haywood Ewell and extend our sincere condolences to
19her family and friends; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
