HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the passing of Joyce Marie Haywood Ewell, who passed away on April 4, 2016; and

WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell was born on September 29, 1932; her parents were Anthony Rudolph Haywood and Inez Baker Haywood; she married Raymond Whitney Ewell on September 14, 1953; and

WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell was raised in Chicago, attended McCosh Elementary School, and graduated from Englewood High School in 1950; she continued to pursue her education and received a bachelor's degree in education from Chicago Teachers College in 1960 and a master's degree from DePaul University in 1969; and

WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell was a member of St. Edmunds Episcopal Church; she later became a devoted member and lay minister of Messiah-St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church, where she served as the first female Senior Warden; and

WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell started her teaching career at the Chicago Public Schools; she later worked with the City Colleges of Chicago, where she advanced to the position of Vice-President of Olive Harvey College, and continued to teach at Malcolm X College until she retired in 2000; and

WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell was a faithful member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Theta Omega Chapter; she also was a member of the Woodlawn Organization and the Women of S.I.C.K.; and

WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell loved to travel, hang out with her friends in Acapulco, Mexico and Union Pier, Michigan, and visit her family in Denver, Colorado; and

WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell was preceded in death by her parents and her younger sister, Jean Haywood Byrd; and

WHEREAS, Joyce Ewell is survived by her sons, Raymond, Marc Whitney, and Raymond Anthony "Tony"; her grandsons, Kendal, Cameron, Kareim, Marc Jr., and Ray; her great-grandson, Silas; her niece, Lynette Byrd Norman; her step-sister, Carolyn Haywood Lee; and her many other relatives and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with all who knew and loved her, mourn the passing of Joyce Marie Haywood Ewell and extend our sincere condolences to her family and friends; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Joyce Ewell as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
