HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Part-time "adjunct" faculty teach approximately 65% of the classes at City Colleges of Chicago (CCC); and

WHEREAS, Part-time faculty teach the same courses and are required to have the same degrees as tenured, full-time professors; and

WHEREAS, A part-time faculty adjunct at CCC teaching 3 classes per semester earns an average of $14,130 per year, well under the federal poverty level of $24,250 for a family of 4; and

WHEREAS, Part-time faculty adjuncts are often forced to teach at multiple schools, thus denying CCC students the extra help outside the classroom that is commonly needed from their professor; and

WHEREAS, Chicago taxpayers are forced to pick up the financial cost for the estimated one-third of part-time faculty who receive governmental assistance; and

WHEREAS, The part-time faculty at CCC have now gone 3 years without a raise or a contract; and

WHEREAS, Adjunct salaries at CCC are not at all competitive with other comparable community colleges, as determined by the Illinois Community College Board; and

WHEREAS, The Board of Trustees of CCC is subject to appointment by and the jurisdiction of the Mayor of the City of Chicago; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge City Colleges of Chicago to negotiate in good faith to reach a new collective bargaining agreement with City Colleges' part-time adjunct union, the City Colleges Contingent Labor Organizing Committee; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we urge City Colleges of Chicago to provide an equitable and living wage for its part-time adjunct faculty; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be delivered to the Board of Trustees of City Colleges of Chicago.
