HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Representative Lane Evans was born on August 4,
31951; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Representative Lane Evans was a graduate of
5Alleman High School in Rock Island; he subsequently earned
6degrees from Augustana College and the Georgetown University
7Law Center; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Representative Lane Evans served his country with
9distinction in the United States Marine Corps from 1969 to
101977; during his stint in the military, he was posted in the
11United States and in Okinawa, Japan; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Representative Lane Evans served the citizens of
13the 17th Congressional District with pride as a member of the
14United States House of Representatives from 1982 to 2006;
15during his career as a Representative, he became well known by
16his constituents and peers as a man of the people who cared
17deeply for the well-being of his fellow veterans; and
 
18    WHEREAS, As a ranking member of the House Committee on
19Veterans' Affairs, Representative Lane Evans advocated for
20veterans of the Vietnam War who were exposed to Agent Orange
21and helped them to receive compensation for their exposure to

1the chemical agents; he led efforts to increase funding for
2various veteran assistance programs and was among the first
3members of Congress to take on issues like post-traumatic
4stress disorder and traumatic brain injury, which have affected
5many veterans of the Iraq War; he also championed numerous
6other initiatives, including legislation to ban landmines and
7the fight to keep the Rock Island Arsenal open, and was lauded
8for his votes against the North American Free Trade Agreement,
9the Gulf War, and the Iraq War; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Representative Lane Evans passed away on November
115, 2014; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
14SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the new Interstate
1574 bridge between the Cities of Moline and Bettendorf, Iowa as
16the Representative Lane Evans Memorial Bridge in recognition of
17his distinguished career of public service; and be it further
 
18    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
19is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
20State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
21giving notice of the name of the Representative Lane Evans
22Memorial Bridge; and be it further

1    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
2presented to the family of Representative Lane Evans, the
3Secretary of the Illinois Department of Transportation, and the
4Mayors of the Cities of Moline and Bettendorf, Iowa.
