1    AN ACT concerning education.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Veterans' Home Medical Providers' Loan
5Repayment Act is amended by changing Sections 1, 5, and 20 as
6follows:

8    Sec. 1. Short title. This Act may be cited as the Veterans'
9Home Medical Providers' Nurses' Loan Repayment Act.

12    Sec. 5. Medical Providers Nurse Loan Repayment Program.
13There is created, beginning July 1, 2007, the Medical Providers
14Nurse Loan Repayment Program to be administered by the Illinois
15Student Assistance Commission in consultation with the
16Department of Veterans' Affairs. The program shall provide
17assistance, subject to appropriation, to eligible physicians
18and nurses.

21    Sec. 20. Eligibility.

1    (a) The Commission shall, on an annual basis, receive and
2consider applications for grant assistance under the program.
3An applicant is eligible for a grant under the program if the
4Commission finds that the applicant:
5        (1) is a United States citizen or permanent resident;
6        (2) is a resident of Illinois;
7        (3) is working as a physician, certified nurse
8    practitioner, registered professional nurse, certified
9    nursing assistant, or licensed practical nurse in a State
10    veterans' home;
11        (4) is a borrower with an outstanding balance due on an
12    educational loan; and
13        (5) has not defaulted on an educational loan.
14    (b) Preference may be given to previous recipients of a
15grant under the program, provided that the recipient continues
16to meet the eligibility requirements set forth in this Section.
17    (c) For each year during which an individual receives a
18grant under this program, he or she must fulfill a separate
1912-month period as a physician, certified nurse practitioner,
20registered professional nurse, certified nursing assistant, or
21licensed practical nurse in a State veterans' home.

23    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
24becoming law.
