SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Marvin Wright, who passed away on August
43, 2013; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Marvin Wright was born on May 20, 1917 in Fulton,
6Alabama; his parents were Marvin Wright, Sr. and Almeda (nee
7Falconer) Wright; he married Katie (nee Harper) Wright on March
821, 1952; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Marvin Wright earned his Bachelor's Degree from
10Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana and his Master's
11Degree plus 30 from the University of Illinois at
12Urbana-Champaign; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Marvin Wright proudly served in the United States
14Army as a staff sergeant in the European Theater of Operations
15during the World War II battles and campaigns at Normandy,
16Northern France, the Ardennes, the Rhineland, and Central
17Europe, which began on "D-Day" on June 6, 1944; his service
18gained him many decorations and citations, including the Silver
19Star, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory
20Medal; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Marvin Wright was a premier educator and

1administrator, having served with distinction as an elementary
2school teacher and principal in East St. Louis School District
3189 until his retirement from the district on June 30, 1979; he
4later served as manager of the Illinois Attorney General's East
5St. Louis Office; during the 1990 Census, he served as an
6official at the Belleville, Illinois Census Office; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Marvin Wright was a professional musician with
8such notables as Clark Terry and others; he was a jazz devotee
9who was also studious and scholarly; he loved to read and
10subscribed to many scholarly magazines and men's fashion
11magazines; he was also known and admired for his dapper manner
12of attire and impeccable grooming; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Marvin Wright was a member of Veterans of Foreign
14Wars Post 3480, where he served as commander of the post and as
15quartermaster of the post for several terms; he was also a
16member of the American Legion and served as inaugural chairman
17of the State Community Board, president of the Senior Citizens
18Organization, president of the School District 189 Principals'
19Organization, and Boy Scout leader; he was a member of Phi
20Delta Kappa; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Marvin Wright was preceded in death by his
22parents; his sister, Blanche (nee Wright) Dotson; his nephew,
23Thomas Dotson; and many of his cousins; and

1    WHEREAS, Marvin Wright is survived by his wife, Dr. Katie
2Harper Wright; his step-daughter, Virginia Jordan; his
3granddaughter, Diana Kaye Jordan; and his many cousins,
4friends, and colleagues; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
6ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his
7family and friends, mourn the passing of Marvin Wright; and be
8it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10presented to the family of Marvin Wright as an expression of
11our sympathy.
