SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Marguerite Sara "Rete" Kaufman of
4Woodstock, who passed away on August 16, 2014; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Marguerite Kaufman was born in Woodstock on August
614, 1913 to the Reverend Dr. Roger and Blanche (nee Hostetter)
7Kaufman; she was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and
8graduated from Woodstock Public High School in 1931; she
9received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Carthage College in
101935 and later earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of
11Science in library science from the University of Illinois; she
12also took doctoral-level courses; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Marguerite Kaufman's professional career began
14with 2 years of intermittent teaching assignments; she spent
15several years teaching at Woodstock Community High School,
16eventually also serving as the school's librarian; she then
17moved to Iowa to work as teacher-librarian at the State School
18for the Blind; advancing professionally in her field
19necessitated several geographic moves, which included working
20as a librarian at Midland College in Nebraska, then at Carthage
21College, the University of Illinois Architecture Library, and
22Elmhurst College; she then moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts
23and spent 6 years as the architecture reference librarian at

1Harvard University's Graduate School of Design; she returned to
2Illinois and served as the Head Librarian of the Art and
3Architecture Library and as Assistant Professor of Library
4Administration at the University of Illinois; she retired from
5the University of Illinois in 1974 and returned to Woodstock;
6and
 
7    WHEREAS, Marguerite Kaufman was an avid White Sox fan and
8an enthusiastic bird watcher with the local Audubon Society;
9from 1980 to 1998, she fed her love of learning and sense of
10adventure by traveling via train and bus to 29 different
11elderhostels across the United States; she also enjoyed
12walking, tending to indoor and outdoor plants, participating in
13Grace Lutheran Church's women's circles, and attending Retired
14Teacher Association events; among extended family members, she
15was known for her carefully chosen gifts of books to the
16children and for the designer Barbie doll clothing she sewed by
17hand; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Marguerite Kaufman was preceded in death by her
19parents and brother; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Marguerite Kaufman is survived by cousins, Edna
21Steadman, Dan (Marilyn) Steadman and children, Bruce (Lois)
22Gerloff and children, Brian (Carole) Gerloff and children,
23Pamela Gerloff, Jane Gerloff (god-daughter), Lisa (Bill)

1Gerloff Banker, and Carl (Dagmar) Lofgren and children;
2therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
4ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
5Marguerite Sara "Rete" Kaufman, and extend our sincere
6condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved
7her; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to the family of Marguerite Kaufman as an expression
10of our deepest sympathy.
