SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Recognizing that work remains to be done to aid
3the high number of unemployed and underemployed individuals,
4this State and the federal government have announced major
5initiatives to promote workforce development activities; and
 
6    WHEREAS, These activities are primarily aimed at helping
7individuals acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to
8pursue a career in the current competitive job market; and
 
9    WHEREAS, As part of these efforts, this State will be
10promoting a new initiative to increase the work readiness of
11individuals by obtaining a college degree or career
12certificate; and
 
13    WHEREAS, At the federal level, major efforts are being made
14to review the nation's workforce and training system to make it
15more job-driven, integrated, and effective; and
 
16    WHEREAS, A key aspect in State and federal efforts is the
17active involvement of the private business sector; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Workforce Investment Boards provide businesses
19with an important forum to inform training providers, including
20the public education system, community colleges, the State

1university system, and proprietary schools of the needs of the
2local business community; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Workforce Investment Boards were established by
4federal law to serve as a vital provider of information,
5programs, and services to individuals seeking employment,
6employers, and training providers; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Under the authority provided to Workforce
8Investment Boards, opportunities and funds are available for
9individuals to enroll in training programs and services at job
10centers throughout this State that give priority to the local
11business community's current and future needs; and
 
12    WHEREAS, It is fitting that the members of the Senate
13support the role that Workforce Investment Boards play in
14providing important programs and services that help strengthen
15local communities and, by extension, this State and the nation;
16therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
18ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize the week
19of August 25 through August 31, 2014 as "Workforce Development
20Week" in Illinois and encourage individuals, businesses, and
21governmental organizations to visit and promote the programs
22and services offered through local Workforce Investment

1Boards; and be it further
 
2    RESOLVED, That August 25 through August 31, 2014 will be an
3opportunity for Workforce Investment Boards to highlight and
4promote the many ways in which they are undertaking this
5important work; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7delivered to the Department of Commerce and Economic
8Opportunity.
