SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:

ILCON Art. V, Sec. 2

Proposes to amend the Executive Article of the Illinois Constitution. Provides that no person shall be elected to the same Executive Branch office more than twice, and no person who has held the office of an Executive Branch officer as Acting Governor or as an appointee for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected to that office shall be elected to that Executive Branch office more than once. Effective upon being declared adopted and applies to each person elected or appointed to an Executive Branch office or who serves as Acting Governor on and after the 2018 general election.

SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that there shall be submitted to the electors of the State for adoption or rejection at the general election next occurring at least 6 months after the adoption of this resolution a proposition to amend Article V of the Illinois Constitution by changing Section 2 as follows:

ARTICLE V

THE EXECUTIVE

(ILCON Art. V, Sec. 2)

SECTION 2. TERMS

(a) These elected officers of the Executive Branch shall hold office for four years beginning on the second Monday of January after their election and, except in the case of the Lieutenant Governor, until their successors are qualified. They shall be elected at the general election in 1978 and every four years thereafter.

(b) No person shall be elected to the same Executive Branch office more than twice, and no person who has held the office of an Executive Branch officer as Acting Governor or as an appointee for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected to that office shall be elected to that Executive Branch office more than once.

SCHEDULE

This Constitutional Amendment takes effect upon being declared adopted in accordance with Section 7 of the Illinois Constitutional Amendment Act and applies to each person elected or appointed to an Executive Branch office or who serves as Acting Governor on and after the 2018 general election.
