SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
15 ILCS 310/12  from Ch. 124, par. 112

    Amends the Secretary of State Merit Employment Code. Authorizes (rather than requires) the Secretary of State to grant a leave of absence, without pay, to any person who holds a position in the Office of the Secretary of State and is elected to public office. Authorizes the public official's leave of absence from the Office of the Secretary of State to continue for so long as the person remains an elected official or for a period of 4 years, whichever is shorter (rather than for so long as the person remains an elected official). Authorizes (rather than requires) reinstatement upon request. Requires reinstatement to be requested within 30 days after the public official terminates his or her leave of absence. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning government.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Secretary of State Merit Employment Code is
5amended by changing Section 12 as follows:
 
6    (15 ILCS 310/12)  (from Ch. 124, par. 112)
7    Sec. 12. Employees of the Office of the Secretary of State -
8 election to public office - leave of absence - re-entry of
9service. Any person holding a position in the Office of the
10Secretary of State, who is elected to public office, may shall,
11upon request, be granted a leave of absence, without pay, from
12such position. The leave of absence shall continue so long as
13he remains an elected officer or for a period of 4 years,
14whichever is shorter and for a period of 30 calendar days
15thereafter.
16    If such person files a written request with the Director of
17Personnel to re-enter active service with the Office of the
18Secretary of State within a 30-day period following the
19termination of his leave, such 30 day period he may shall be
20reinstated to his former position or a position of comparable
21duties, responsibilities and pay.

1    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
