HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to recognize Julius W. Hegeler II
4for his contributions to the community and congratulate him on
5his induction into the Vermilion Advantage Hall of Fame; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Julius Hegeler II graduated from Millikin
7University in 1950 with a degree in Business Administration; he
8served his country in the United States Air Force as a jet
9fighter pilot during the Korean War, flying 70 missions without
10ever getting a scratch; he was awarded the Distinguished Flying
11Cross, an Air Medal, and an Oak Leaf Cluster; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Following the war, Julius Hegeler II returned, and
13along with his 3 brothers, started Peterson Filing and
14Packaging, later known as Peterson/Puritan, and it became the
15world's largest contract packager of chemical specialties; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Julius Hegeler II decided a long time ago to
17return the good fortune he has received by giving back to his
18community; he gives to his alma maters, Millikin University and
19Culver Academy, but his heart is with the people of Danville
20and Vermilion County; he is always searching for projects to
21help the community; he has served numerous terms on the
22Danville Area Community College Foundation Board and he is a

1major donor for Presence United Samaritans Medical Center, its
2foundation and outreach programs, and he was the original donor
3who made the popular Polar Express event at the Festival of
4Trees possible; and
 
5    WHEREAS, In 1992, the Julius W. Hegeler II Foundation was
6started to focus on organizations that are philanthropic,
7research-oriented, and educational in nature; the Foundation
8has given millions of dollars to help Vermilion County; it has
9helped build 3 Ambucs Playgrounds for Everyone, given to
10Presence United Samaritans Medical Center to fund Cancer Center
11renovations and create a Women's Healthcare Center, donated
12money to ensure the Danville District 118 Foundation can
13support students and teachers into the future through special
14projects, and has given generously to help the Danville Area
15Community College reach new heights in campus renovations,
16including a marble bench dedicated to long time liberal arts
17instructor Mary Coffman, the Garden Gateway entrance to the
18college, the new greenhouse, and the new Technology Center,
19which was named after Julius; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Julius Hegeler II has supported the Danville
21Symphony, the United Way, the Vermilion County War Museum, and
22many other organizations across Vermilion County, and he has
23opened his Vermilion Street mansion to welcome home Vermilion
24County stars to raise funds for the Fisher Theater renovation,

1and to raise funds for the American Diabetes Association; he
2has touched thousands of lives and most people will never know
3as he does not do it for the recognition; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Julius Hegeler II will be inducted into the
5Vermilion Advantage Hall of Fame on March 16, 2014; therefore,
6be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9we recognize Julius W. Hegeler II for his contributions to the
10community and congratulate him on his induction into the
11Vermilion Advantage Hall of Fame; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to Julius Hegeler II as an expression of our esteem
14and respect.
