HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate the Illinois
4School for the Deaf in Jacksonville on the occasion of the
5175th anniversary of its founding; and
 
6    WHEREAS, In 1838, Senator Orville H. Browning from Quincy
7was so impressed by a fellow steamboat traveler, an educated
8deaf man from Kentucky, that he decided to propose legislation
9to establish a school that would give educational opportunities
10for the deaf citizens of Illinois; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Senator Browning enlisted the support of State
12Representative Abraham Lincoln for passage in the Illinois
13House of Representatives; on February 23, 1839, Governor Thomas
14Carlin signed Browning's bill creating the Illinois Asylum for
15the Education of the Deaf and Dumb; and
 
16    WHEREAS, In 1903, the school's name was changed to the
17Illinois School for the Deaf; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Throughout the years, the Illinois School of the
19Deaf has grown considerably, with a humble enrollment of 4
20students on opening day and 14 students the following year;
21today, it serves an impressive 253 students throughout the

1various programs that are offered; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf is recognized as
3a valuable community asset and has gained a prestigious
4reputation in the State as a premier institution for the deaf
5and those hard of hearing; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf has done an
7extraordinary job in accomplishing its mission to educate
8students who are deaf and hard of hearing to become
9responsible, self-supporting citizens; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf has shown
11exemplary leadership with the students in helping them achieve
12their highest academic and social potential through their
13instructional, residential, and recreational programs and
14related support services; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf empowers students
16to explore technological trends and employment opportunities
17for the future, while also providing a safe, healthy, and
18respectful learning, living, and working environment; and
 
19    WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf offers an
20extraordinarily supportive and caring atmosphere in order for
21its students to develop positive self-esteem and skills

1necessary to be successful in an ever-changing world; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf's 175th
3anniversary celebration will take place on February 22, 2014 at
4the Jacksonville Country Club; the celebration will include
5dinner and a live performance honoring the founding of the
6school; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9we congratulate the Illinois School for the Deaf on its 175th
10anniversary and wish the school's administration and faculty
11many more years of success in the future; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the Illinois School for the Deaf as an expression
14of our esteem and respect.
