HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate the Illinois
4School for the Deaf in Jacksonville on the occasion of the
5175th anniversary of the school's founding; and
 
6    WHEREAS, In 1838, Senator Orville H. Browning from Quincy
7was so impressed by a fellow steamboat traveler, an educated
8deaf man from Kentucky, that he decided to propose legislation
9to establish a school that would give educational opportunities
10for the deaf citizens of Illinois; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Senator Browning enlisted the support of State
12Representative Abraham Lincoln for passage in the Illinois
13House of Representatives; on February 23, 1839, Governor Thomas
14Carlin signed Browning's bill creating the Illinois Asylum for
15the Education of the Deaf and Dumb; in 1903, the school's name
16was changed to the Illinois School for the Deaf; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Throughout the years, the Illinois School of the
18Deaf has grown considerably; on the day that the school opened,
19there was a humble enrollment of 2 students, with 14 students
20the following year; today, it serves an impressive 253 students
21throughout the various programs that are offered; and

1    WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf is recognized as
2a valuable community asset and has gained a prestigious
3reputation in the State as a premier institution for the deaf
4and those hard of hearing; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf has done an
6extraordinary job in accomplishing its mission to educate
7students who are deaf and hard of hearing to become
8responsible, self-supporting citizens; and
 
9    WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf has shown
10exemplary leadership with the students in helping them achieve
11their highest academic and social potential through their
12instructional, residential, and recreational programs and
13related support services; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf empowers students
15to explore technological trends and employment opportunities
16for the future, while also providing a safe, healthy, and
17respectful learning, living, and working environment; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf offers an
19extraordinarily supportive and caring atmosphere in order for
20its students to develop positive self-esteem and skills
21necessary to be successful in an ever-changing world; and

1    WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf's 175th
2anniversary celebration will take place on February 22, 2014 at
3the Jacksonville Country Club; the celebration will include
4dinner and a live performance honoring the founding of the
5school; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8we congratulate the Illinois School for the Deaf on its 175th
9anniversary and wish the school's administration and faculty
10many more years of success in the future; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the Illinois School for the Deaf as an expression
13of our esteem and respect.
