HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Heart disease is the number one killer of women,
3yet is often preventable; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Cardiovascular diseases cause one in 3 women's
5deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute;
6and
 
7    WHEREAS, An estimated 43 million women in the United States
8are affected by cardiovascular diseases; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Heart disease kills more women than all forms of
10cancer combined, but is often undiagnosed; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Ninety percent of women have one or more risk
12factors for developing heart disease, yet only one in 5
13American women believe that heart disease is their greatest
14health threat; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Women comprise only 24% of participants in all
16heart-related studies; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Since 1984, more women than men have died each
18year from heart disease and the gap between men and women's
19survival continues to widen; and

1    WHEREAS, Women are less likely to call 911 for themselves
2when experiencing symptoms of a heart attack than they are if
3someone else were having a heart attack; and
 
4    WHEREAS, The American Heart Association's Go Red For Women
5movement has impacted the health of women for the last 10
6years; more than 627,000 lives have been saved and 330 fewer
7women are dying every day; and
 
8    WHEREAS, In celebration of the 10th anniversary of National
9Wear Red Day on February 7, 2014, Go Red For Women is asking
10all women across America to Go Red by wearing red and speaking
11red; Go Red For Women has suggested that women ask their doctor
12to check their blood pressure and cholesterol, stop smoking,
13lose weight, exercise, and eat healthy, realize their risk of
14heart disease, educate their families on the importance of
15healthy food choices and regular physical activity, and tell
16every woman they know that heart disease is their number one
17killer; and
 
18    WHEREAS, By increasing awareness, speaking up about heart
19disease, and empowering women to reduce their risk for
20cardiovascular disease, we can save thousands of lives each
21year; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3we designate the date of February 7, 2014 as Illinois Wear Red
4Day in the State of Illinois and urge the citizens of this
5State to show their support for women and the fight against
6heart disease by commemorating this day by wearing the color
7red; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to Go Red For Women as a symbol of our esteem and
10respect.
