HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Macauley
4G. "Mackie" Nicholes, who passed away on July 22, 2013; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Macauley Nicholes was born on March 31, 1943 in
6Lowell, Massachusetts; his parents were Robert Gilliland
7Nicholes and Clair Macauley Nicholes; he married Roxanna Buse
8in 1968 in Mason City; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Macauley Nicholes graduated from Easley High
10School in Easley, South Carolina; he subsequently attended
11Chowan College in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, where he played
12football and earned his Associate of Arts degree, and Bethel
13College in McKenzie, Tennessee, where he earned his Bachelor of
14Science degree; and
 
15    WHEREAS, After college, Macauley Nicholes began his
16teaching career in Atlanta, Georgia before moving to positions
17in Chicago and Lake Ridge, Indiana; he and his wife taught in
18northern Indiana for 3 1/2 years before moving to Harrisburg in
191972 to open a Monical's Pizza Restaurant, which was later
20renamed "Mackie's Pizza"; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Shortly after moving to Harrisburg, Macauley

1Nicholes went to the local radio station and offered to
2broadcast the high school games; with the help of his good
3friend and mentor, Bill Franks, he purchased WEBQ (Rock 100),
4which enabled him to broadcast many games and sports shows,
5including SIU basketball and Illinois Football with Dick
6Butkus; during this time, he also served as director of the
7Illinois Broadcasting Association; and
 
8    WHEREAS, In the early 1980's, Macauley Nicholes traded WEBQ
9for WSIL-TV, which he owned with 3 partners; after the TV
10business was sold, he opened Thunderbird Travel, which was
11later renamed Saluki Travel; during this time, he traveled
12extensively, visiting over 100 countries all over the world;
13and
 
14    WHEREAS, Macauley Nicholes was a member of the Harrisburg
15Lodge No. 325 Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons and the
16Harrisburg Rotary Club for over 40 years; in 2012, he received
17the Paul Harris Fellow Award; he was also a member of First
18Presbyterian Church of Harrisburg and served as a director on
19the Southern Illinois College Foundation Board for several
20years; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Macauley Nicholes enjoyed sports, playing
22basketball, football, baseball, and golf, and announcing games
23on the radio; and

1    WHEREAS, Macauley Nicholes was preceded in death by his
2twin brother, Gilliland Macauley Nicholes, and his parents,
3Robert and Claire; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Macauley Nicholes is survived by his wife,
5Roxanna; his sons, Robbie Nicholes and Martin (Whitney)
6Nicholes; his daughter, Nancy (Rick) Owen; his beloved
7grandchildren, Hampton Macauley Owen, Frankie Leigh Nicholes,
8and Quincy Roxanna Nicholes; and his loyal dogs, Biscuit and
9Muffin; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
11NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
12we, along with his family and friends, mourn the passing of
13Macauley G. "Mackie" Nicholes; and be it further
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to the family of Macauley Nicholes as an expression
16of our sympathy.
