HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate the Glen Ellyn Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority on 36 years of service in the western suburbs of Chicago and the 100-year anniversary of the national organization; and

WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was founded January 13, 1913, by 22 African-American women on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C.; the organization now has more than 300,000 members and nearly 1,000 chapters worldwide; it is the single largest African-American women's organization in the United States; January 1, 2013, marked the beginning of a year-long centennial anniversary celebration of the sorority's founding; and

WHEREAS, The Glen Ellyn chapter of Delta Sigma Theta was chartered on January 23, 1977; it is one of the largest chapters in the State of Illinois with more than 300 members; they serve areas from Oak Park to Dekalb to Romeoville to Melrose Park and cover 6 counties including Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Will, and DeKalb; and

WHEREAS, The Glen Ellyn chapter of Delta Sigma Theta has been a prominent entity in the western suburbs of Chicago by providing voter registration drives, health screenings, financial planning seminars, healthy lifestyle recommendations, scholarships to college bound high school students, and educational programs for youth; and

WHEREAS, The Glen Ellyn chapter of Delta Sigma Theta provides its services at no cost to the community and are funded by membership dues and grants received from the Minerva Educational Foundation; members provide hundreds of volunteer hours throughout the year to assist with these programs; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the Glen Ellyn Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority on 36 years of service in the western suburbs of Chicago and 100 years of global service by the national organization, Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Glen Ellyn Area chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority as an expression of our esteem and respect.
