HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 1913 Illinois law granting women the right to vote for President of the United States and municipal officers; and

WHEREAS, The law went into effect when it was signed by Illinois Governor Edward F. Dunne on June 26, 1913; and

WHEREAS, The passage of the law made the State of Illinois the first state east of the Mississippi River to allow women to vote in presidential elections; and

WHEREAS, Over 200,000 women in the State voted in the 1914 election, helping to pave the way for the passage of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1920, which gave full suffrage to all women in the nation; and

WHEREAS, The members of this body are proud of Illinois' pioneering role in granting the women of the nation their hard-won rights; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we celebrate the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage in the State of Illinois and urge the citizens of this State to join us in celebrating this great milestone.
