HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to recognize the 200th anniversary
4of the West Eden Church; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The West Eden Church was established in 1813 by
6Hezekiah West; feeling the need for religious faith and
7education in the lives of those in the community, he originally
8used his home as the church and school for his family and a
9small settlement of nearby neighbors; due to the migration of
10people into the area, it soon became necessary to have larger
11quarters for the school and church; in 1813, the present site
12was chosen and a log church was constructed as the second
13Methodist church in Illinois; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The present church building was constructed in
151876 and dedicated in 1879; it has been remodeled and improved
16extensively on at least 2 occasions since original
17construction; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Early Methodist circuit rider, Peter Cartwright,
19visited and preached in the West Eden Church's original
20building as late as about 1870, beginning a continuous and
21active church organization providing religious experiences for
22the settlement over a period of 6 generations; and

1    WHEREAS, The celebration of the West Eden Church's 200th
2anniversary will take place on June 23, 2013; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
4NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
5we recognize the 200th anniversary of the West Eden Church and
6wish them many more years of continued success; and be it
7further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to the West Eden Church as an expression of our
10esteem and respect.
