HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate the Lebanon School
4District on the 140th anniversary of its founding; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The Lebanon Public School began in 1872 with C.V.
6Bridge as principal, 7 teachers, and a janitor; early school
7rules included such provisions as "the air in each schoolroom
8should be effectually changed at each recess in winter", "the
9temperature shall at no time exceed 65 degrees", and "no
10teacher or pupil shall use tobacco in any shape during school
11hours"; and
 
12    WHEREAS, In 1885, the school bonds matured, and, surrounded
13by witnesses to celebrate, the bonds were burned in the
14school's stove; at the turn-of-the-century, the high school
15course was 2 years long; the last graduating class of the
16nineteenth century included Benjamin Howard Mc-Allister, age
1715, salutatorian, and Cora Gedney, valedictorian; and
 
18    WHEREAS, In 1921, the Lebanon High School District was
19organized and a school board elected with Dr. Phil Griesbaum as
20chairman and Dr. Fred Renner as secretary; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Notable alumni from Lebanon High include track

1star, Craig Virgin, who in 1973 won fame and set records around
2the world for the one, 2, and 3-mile events; and
 
3    WHEREAS, The 140th celebration will take place on April 16,
42013, in a one-room school house to commemorate the district's
5humble beginnings; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8we congratulate the Lebanon School District on its 140th
9anniversary and we honor the legacy they have built; and be it
10further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the Lebanon School District as an expression of
13our esteem and respect.
