HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to honor Dr. Irene H. Brodie, mayor
4of the Village of Robbins, as as retires after 24 years; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Mayor Brodie is the current, longest-serving,
6female, African-American mayor in the nation; her reign as
7mayor saw improvements in the water and sewer systems, roads
8and transportation, code enforcement, economic development,
9grant procurement, land acquisition, residential development,
10and public safety; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Mayor Brodie's 36-year tenure in government
12consists of 12 years as municipal clerk for the Village of
13Robbins and 24 years as the mayor; she is a longtime educator
14and administrator, having taught in school districts 143 1/2
15and 218 and achieving the position of dean at Moraine Valley
16Community College; she spent 32 years of service to Moraine
17Valley and upon her retirement a section of Building-B was
18named the "Dr. Irene H. Brodie Academic Skills Center"; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Mayor Brodie's most noteworthy accomplishment is
20her scholarship program; it has funded the tuition costs for
21hundreds of students throughout the years and her individual
22efforts have produced teachers, lawyers, doctors, engineers,

1and educators around the globe; she has hired, financially
2supported, tutored, counseled, and graduated hundreds of
3residents from Robbins and the surrounding communities; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Mayor Brodie has a history of service in many
5areas; she was the vice-president of the Illinois Municipal
6League, executive board member and assistant secretary of the
7National Conference of Black Mayors, and the chair of the
8Education Committee and Scholarship Committee for the National
9Conference of Black Mayors; she has been appointed to numerous
10gubernatorial transition teams and has been on various State
11and federal advisory boards; she was a member of the
12Metropolitan Mayors Caucus under Mayor Richard Daley, served on
13President Clinton's environmental think-tank group, and was a
14guest lecturer at the Harvard University Graduate School of
15Business; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Mayor Brodie is married to J. Edmon Brodie and
17they have one child, Jeraye E. Brodie; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
19NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
20we honor Mayor Irene Brodie as she retires as mayor of Robbins,
21thank her for her years of service to the community, and wish
22her well in all her future endeavours; and be it further

2presented to Mayor Irene Brodie as an expression of our esteem
3and respect.
