HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize John Maloof on his
4achievements in historic preservation and for his commitment to
5working on behalf of the artistic legacy of Vivian Maier; and
 
6    WHEREAS, John Maloof is an author and street photographer
7involved in the historic preservation of Chicago's Northwest
8Side; he is the former President of the Jefferson Park
9Historical Society; and
 
10    WHEREAS, John Maloof first discovered the negatives of
11Vivian Maier's work in 2007 while compiling a book with Daniel
12Pogorzelski about the history of the Portage Park neighborhood
13where he lives; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Over the course of a year, John Maloof saved
15approximately 90% of Vivian Maier's work, accumulating a
16collection of 100,000 to 150,000 negatives, which included more
17than 3,000 prints, hundreds of rolls of film, home movies,
18audio tape interviews, and various other items; and
 
19    WHEREAS, John Maloof, in conjunction with Anthony Rydzon,
20researched the history of Vivian Maier; he made it his mission
21to promote her work and to safeguard the archive for the

1benefit of future generations; and
 
2    WHEREAS, John Maloof has now published several books
3highlighting Vivian Maier's photographic prowess; and
 
4    WHEREAS, John Maloof, along with Charlie Siskel and Jeff
5Garlin, has devoted several years to producing an award-winning
6documentary film about Vivian Maier; and
 
7    WHEREAS, John Maloof has helped provide opportunities and
8resources for female students at the School of the Art
9Institute of Chicago in memory of Vivian Maier through the
10endowed Vivian Maier Scholarship Fund - a need-based
11scholarship made possible by donations from John Maloof,
12Charlie Siskel, and art gallerist Howard Greenberg; therefore,
13be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
16we recognize John Maloof on his achievements in historic
17preservation and for his commitment to working on behalf of the
18artistic legacy of Vivian Maier; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to John Maloof as an expression of our esteem and
21respect.
