HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate Elgin High School
4teacher Deb Perryman on receiving the 2014 Environmental
5Educator of the Year award from the Environmental Education
6Association of Illinois; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Deb Perryman was recognized for implementing
8environmental education in and out of the classroom, including
9using the 35 acres of natural space outside of Elgin High
10School as an instructional tool; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Deb Perryman and her students spearheaded an
12advocacy campaign about Miss Martha, the last Passenger Pigeon
13on Earth, to promote protecting biodiversity; the campaign
14resulted in Governor Pat Quinn naming September 2014, the
15"Month of the Passenger Pigeon"; her students are also working
16on securing a national proclamation about Miss Martha from
17President Obama; with her help, Elgin High environmental
18students are organizing a National Biodiversity Teach-In to
19honor the 100th anniversary of Miss Martha's death; as part of
20the program, professionals from across the country will present
21webinars focused on biodiversity topics including protecting
22Blanding's turtles, the impact of balloons and plastics in the
23ocean, GMO's effect on biodiversity, monarch butterflies,

1shore birds, native plants, and more; and
 
2    WHEREAS, With the help of the Elgin Sustainability
3Commission and other local organizations, Deb Perryman and her
4students also helped inspire the first Elgin Water Day in 2013,
5with a formal proclamation issued by Elgin Mayor Dave Kaptain;
6the Elgin Water Day art show and 6K Walk for Water were
7extremely successful and students are planning the second Elgin
8Water Day for this October; and
 
9    WHEREAS, In 2003, Deb Perryman's students helped her author
10the BP Leader Award which earned a $30,000 grant and an
11additional $10,000 the following year; the grant paid for
12various environmental projects including transportation for
13students to participate in the Mighty Acorns program that
14provides field trips to nature centers; it also paid for boots,
15nets, and aquatic chemical test kits for students to monitor
16the health of Poplar Creek, and pelts, skulls, and track and
17wildlife cameras for mammal studies; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
19NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
20we congratulate Elgin High School teacher Deb Perryman on
21receiving the 2014 Environmental Educator of the Year award;
22and be it further
