| 2 | | WHEREAS, The Mahomet Aquifer is an aquifer located in | 3 | | east-central Illinois; the aquifer covers an area of over 4,000 | 4 | | square miles in Champaign, DeWitt, Ford, Iroquois, Logan, | 5 | | Macon, McLean, Piatt, Sangamon, Tazewell, and Vermilion | 6 | | counties; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, The Mahomet Aquifer is a vital source of drinking | 8 | | water for the residents of east-central Illinois, as well as a | 9 | | source for irrigation and industrial use water; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, The Mahomet Aquifer supplies, on average, 340 | 11 | | million gallons per day of clean consumable water; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, The population of east-central Illinois residents | 13 | | who depend on the Mahomet Aquifer is expected to grow from a | 14 | | current total of 100,000 to 900,000 by 2050; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Any pollution or contamination of the water of the | 16 | | Mahomet Aquifer would be detrimental to all of the residents of | 17 | | east-central Illinois; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, The United States Environmental Protection Agency | 19 | | is responsible for designating aquifers as Sole Source | 20 | | Aquifers, which helps to protect aquifers from |

| 1 | | federally-funded projects that may contaminate groundwater; | 2 | | and | 3 | | WHEREAS, The Mahomet Aquifer is too important of a source | 4 | | of consumable water for the residents of east-central Illinois | 5 | | to be compromised by potential contamination; therefore, be it
| 6 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 7 | | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 8 | | we urge the United States Environmental Protection Agency to | 9 | | classify the Mahomet Aquifer as a Sole Source Aquifer in order | 10 | | protect the residents of east-central Illinois and ensure they | 11 | | have clean drinking water for future generations; and be it | 12 | | further
| 13 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution are | 14 | | presented to United States Environmental Protection Agency | 15 | | Region 5 Coordinator William Spaulding, the members of the | 16 | | Illinois congressional delegation, and the Governor.
