SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
305 ILCS 5/12-4.4a new

    Amends the Illinois Public Aid Code. Provides that in an effort to ensure that recipients of benefits provided under the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) (formerly the Food Stamp Program) have access to fresh, nutritious foods, the Secretary of the Department of Human Services shall seek a waiver from the United States Department of Agriculture to allow the State to require all retail food stores, as a condition of eligibility to accept and redeem SNAP benefits held on a LINK card, to offer for sale on a continual basis fresh, nutritious foods.

1    AN ACT concerning public aid.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Illinois Public Aid Code is amended by
5adding Section 12-4.4a as follows:
 
6    (305 ILCS 5/12-4.4a new)
7    Sec. 12-4.4a. Waiver to require retail food stores that
8accept SNAP to sale fresh foods.
9    "LINK card" means an electronic benefits transfer card
10issued by the Department of Human Services for the purpose of
11enabling a user of the card to obtain SNAP (formerly known as
12food stamps) benefits or cash.
13    In an effort to ensure that recipients of benefits provided
14under the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
15(SNAP) (formerly the Food Stamp Program) have access to fresh,
16nutritious foods, the Secretary of the Department of Human
