SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Robert William Carlson, who passed away on June 16, 2022 at the age of 89; and

WHEREAS, Robert Carlson was born on September 26, 1932 in Chicago, the eldest child of Dorothy and William Carlson; and

WHEREAS, Robert Carlson was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, earning his Eagle Scout Badge; and

WHEREAS, Robert Carlson graduated from Chicago Christian High School and Carleton College and served as a U.S. naval aviator, stationed in Iwakuni, Japan, as a lieutenant; and

WHEREAS, Robert Carlson, upon his return, began his business career in management consulting and became the chief financial officer at Bronson and Bratton, a manufacturing company in Burr Ridge; and

WHEREAS, Robert Carlson and his wife Barbara (Koch) were married in 1961 and lived in Oak Park and River Forest for the next 60 years; and

WHEREAS, Robert Carlson was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in River Forest, where he served in numerous lay leadership positions; and

WHEREAS, Robert Carlson was on the board of the SAFER Foundation and was actively involved in Bible studies and tutoring with inmates at Cook County Jail; and

WHEREAS, Robert Carlson was a lifelong runner and enjoyed playing ice hockey, baseball, and tennis well into his later years; and

WHEREAS, Robert Carlson always cheered for the Chicago Cubs and Blackhawks; and

WHEREAS, Robert Carlson was introduced to the Japanese language and culture during his time in the Navy, and they remained an essential part of his life as did the many Japanese friends he met throughout his lifetime; and

WHEREAS, Robert Carlson and his wife loved to entertain and opened their home to visitors from abroad, hosting their stay for months to travel or study; and

WHEREAS, Robert Carlson loved the simple things in life, including his famous relish and cookie smashes; and

WHEREAS, Robert Carlson was preceded in death by his son, Brad, who died in infancy; and

WHEREAS, At the time of his passing, Robert Carlson was survived by his wife, Barbara; his sons, Bob Jr., Bill, and Brian; his grandchildren, Ryan, Bradley, Will, and Nick (Bob Jr. and Gayle), Micah and Anaka (Bill and Konni), and Kiernan and Charlie (Brain and Sarah); his sisters, Louise C. Sinclaire and Jane Carlson; and his brother, Genichi Nagao; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Robert Carlson and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Robert Carlson as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
