SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Ella Louise Ivy, who passed away on April
41, 2012; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Ella Ivy was born on February 1, 1931, in Venice,
6Illinois; her parents were Harold Jerome and Helen Louise
7Clemons; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Ella Ivy grew up in Venice and attended schools in
9the Madison school district before graduating from Dunbar High
10School in 1950; as a child, she worked in her family's ice
11cream parlor; she was raised to believe in Jesus Christ and, at
12the age of 15, was filled with the Holy Ghost in the Church of
13God in Christ; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Ella Ivy and her husband, C.B. Ivy, were married
15on July 16, 1950; the young newlywed couple subsequently
16returned to Mississippi to live for a short period before
17becoming a part of the Great Migration of African-Americans
18from the South to the North in search of better economic
19opportunities; they later settled back in Venice, where they
20briefly lived in an apartment converted from a chicken coop
21before eventually buying a house at 1232 Cleveland Avenue in
22East St. Louis, where she was a faithful and loving wife and

1mother to her husband and her 5 children; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Ella Ivy served as a faithful member of The Church
3of Christ the Divine and the Pentecostal Power church
4organizations in several capacities, including secretary and
5President of the Young People's Department; as leader of the
6Young People's Department, she founded the Young People's
7Willing Workers ministry, a ministry that is still in service
8today; after her husband was called into the ministry, she
9began serving in a new capacity as the wife of a District
10Elder, Pastor, and Bishop; the couple traveled often to various
11churches under their ministry in Robbins and Sledge,
12Mississippi, and Oxford, Mississippi, while also maintaining a
13ministry at 1433 Gross Street in East St. Louis; she was a
14dedicated church mother, whose mission was to teach and guide
15women how to conduct themselves as women of God; she was also a
16devout speaker, teacher, and counselor, guiding women in the
17way of Godliness and virtuous behavior, as well as a singer in
18the church's choir; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Ella Ivy was preceded in death by her husband,
20Bishop C.B. Ivy, and her parents; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Ella Ivy is survived by her children, Clarence
22(Donis) Ivy, Christopher (Diane) Ivy, Margaret Ivy, Belynda
23(Oliver) Hamiliton, and Timothy (Karen) Ivy; her 15

1grandchildren; her 19 great-grandchildren; her siblings,
2Harold (Girthal) Clemons, Margaret Clemons, William
3(Gwendolyn) Clemons, Lloyd (Inez) Clemons, Anna Ruth
4Clemons-Shelton, Charles Clemons, Barbara (Charles) Reid,
5Jacqueline (Leon) Glaster, and Arthur Clemons; and her many
6nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
9her family and friends, the passing of Ella Louise Ivy; and be
10it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the family of Ella Ivy as an expression of our
13sympathy.
