SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, All citizens of Illinois should be made aware of
3the ever-present dangers posed by potentially poisonous
4household substances; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Children too often have access to
6over-the-counter and prescription medications and potentially
7toxic household products; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Over the past 49 years, the nation has been
9observing National Poison Prevention Month to help prevent
10accidental poisonings and to provide tips for promoting
11community involvement in poison prevention; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The Illinois Poison Center is a mainstay in the
13emergency medical care system of this State and is recognized
14nationally for its contributions to poison treatment and
15prevention; and
 
16    WHEREAS, The Illinois Poison Center is a key component of
17the State's bioterrorism readiness network, standing ready to
18assist the Department of Public Health and local authorities in
19the event of a biochemical or radiation incident; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Fifty percent of the nearly 90,000 poisonings

1reported last year to the Illinois Poison Center involved
2children under the age of 6 and could have been prevented; and
 
3    WHEREAS, More than 90% of the calls received from the
4public are treated over the phone, quickly and safely by
5experienced, highly qualified staff of the Illinois Poison
6Center; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Illinois Poison Center saves this State more
8than $50,000,000 in unnecessary health care costs; therefore,
9be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we hereby proclaim
12March 2012 as Illinois Poison Prevention Month in Illinois and
13encourage all citizens to learn more about the Illinois Poison
14Center's prevention programs that alert citizens on the
15continuous problem of accidental poisonings and steps that can
16be taken to create healthy and safe home, play, and work
17environments.
