SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Edwin Joseph Carey, who passed away on October 9, 2011; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Edwin Carey was born and raised in Joliet; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Edwin Carey served his country with pride and distinction as a member of the United States Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II; in 1949, he graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in chemical engineering; he began working for Johns Manville Steel Company that same year; during his stint at the steel company, he decided to enter medicine, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, who were both physicians; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Edwin Carey graduated from the University of Illinois Medical School in Chicago in 1959; he completed his internship at Cook County Hospital in 1961; after starting his practice in general medicine in Sandwich, Dr. Carey began training to become a general surgeon and served a residency at Cook County Hospital from 1965 to 1970; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Edwin Carey was a co-founder of the Fountain Medical Group in Sandwich; during his career, he trained emergency medical technicians in 15 surrounding rural communities, created a burn treatment center, and helped establish an intensive care unit at the hospital, which is now called Valley West Community Hospital; he served the Sandwich community faithfully until he closed his practice in July of 2006; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Edwin Carey served as a clinical assistant professor in the department of surgery at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine from 1971 to 1994; in 1975, he was appointed to serve as the institutional physician and medical director of the Sheridan Correctional Center in Sheridan, a position he held for 26 years; and

WHEREAS, In October of 2006, Dr. Edwin Carey was recognized by Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn and the Illinois Rural Health Association as an Illinois' Rural Physician of Excellence in honor of his work in providing medical care for rural citizens and health care infrastructure in rural communities; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Edwin Carey was preceded in death by his first wife, Joan; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Edwin Carey is survived by his wife, Betty Erickson; his sons, Edwin Jr., Andy, John, and Scott; his daughters, Susan Otterstrom, Candy, Carolyn Knoebel, and Jane Nasharr; his sister, Cheryl; his 16 grandchildren; his great-grandson; his stepdaughters, Krista Tetter and Karsta Erickson; and his step-granddaughter; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Dr. Edwin Joseph Carey; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Edwin Carey as an expression of our sympathy.
