SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Elizabeth Ann Briggs of Granite City, who passed away on June 17, 2011; and

WHEREAS, She graduated from Olney High School, where she was crowned homecoming queen of her senior class; she attended McKendree College, where she was a cheerleader and played basketball; she won the college's "Couple Ping Pong Championship" 2 years in a row with her sweetheart "Gene"; and

WHEREAS, She was a volunteer in the community for many years and received many awards and recognition, including "The Citizen of the Year Award" for Granite City and President Bush's "Point of Light Award" for Madison County; she was a member of Niedringhaus United Methodist Church in Granite City and was active with the Sarah Circle and Church Women United; and

WHEREAS, She was a member of the Elkettes and a devoted member of the Teachers Sorority; she was a volunteer at Gateway Regional Medical Center for many years, serving as vice-president and president of the Auxiliary 3 times; she and her husband enjoyed bowling, traveling, and vacations to every state as well as overseas; and

WHEREAS, She retired from the Granite City School District in 1984, after 30 years of service as a teacher; she taught for 23 years in Granite City and 7 years in Madison; and

WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Harold E. "Gene" Briggs, whom she married on June 1, 1949; her parents, Earl C. and Edith E., nee Morgan, Phillips; and her brothers, Ben, Stephen, and Wendell Phillips; and

WHEREAS, Elizabeth Ann Briggs is survived by her sons, Harold E. "Gene" Briggs Jr. and Timothy A. Briggs; her sister, Mary E. Loerch; her many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of Elizabeth Ann Briggs; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Elizabeth Ann Briggs as a symbol of our sincere sympathy.
