SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Elizabeth Ann Briggs of Granite City, who
4passed away on June 17, 2011; and
 
5    WHEREAS, She graduated from Olney High School, where she
6was crowned homecoming queen of her senior class; she attended
7McKendree College, where she was a cheerleader and played
8basketball; she won the college's "Couple Ping Pong
9Championship" 2 years in a row with her sweetheart "Gene"; and
 
10    WHEREAS, She was a volunteer in the community for many
11years and received many awards and recognition, including "The
12Citizen of the Year Award" for Granite City and President
13Bush's "Point of Light Award" for Madison County; she was a
14member of Niedringhaus United Methodist Church in Granite City
15and was active with the Sarah Circle and Church Women United;
16and
 
17    WHEREAS, She was a member of the Elkettes and a devoted
18member of the Teachers Sorority; she was a volunteer at Gateway
19Regional Medical Center for many years, serving as
20vice-president and president of the Auxiliary 3 times; she and
21her husband enjoyed bowling, traveling, and vacations to every
22state as well as overseas; and

1    WHEREAS, She retired from the Granite City School District
2in 1984, after 30 years of service as a teacher; she taught for
323 years in Granite City and 7 years in Madison; and
 
4    WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her husband of 60
5years, Harold E. "Gene" Briggs, whom she married on June 1,
61949; her parents, Earl C. and Edith E., nee Morgan, Phillips;
7and her brothers, Ben, Stephen, and Wendell Phillips; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Elizabeth Ann Briggs is survived by her sons,
9Harold E. "Gene" Briggs Jr. and Timothy A. Briggs; her sister,
10Mary E. Loerch; her many nieces, nephews, and other extended
11family members and friends; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
14her family and friends, the passing of Elizabeth Ann Briggs;
15and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to the family of Elizabeth Ann Briggs as a symbol of
18our sincere sympathy.
