HOUSE RESOLUTION 84

WHEREAS, Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological movement disorder of the central nervous system; the disease has a unique impact on each patient; and

WHEREAS, According to the Parkinson's Action Network, Parkinson's Disease Foundation, the National Parkinson Foundation, the American Parkinson Disease Association, and the National Institutes of Health, there are over one million Americans diagnosed with Parkinson's disease; and

WHEREAS, Symptoms of Parkinson's disease include slowness, tremor, difficulty with balance and speaking, rigidity, and cognitive and memory problems; and

WHEREAS, Although new medicines and therapies may enhance life for some time for people with Parkinson's disease, more work is needed for a cure; and

WHEREAS, Increased education and research are needed to find more effective treatments with fewer side effects and, ultimately, a cure for Parkinson's disease; and

WHEREAS, A multi-disciplinary approach to Parkinson's disease care includes local wellness, support, and caregiver groups; and

WHEREAS, The month of April has been proclaimed as World Wide Parkinson's Awareness Month in order to recognize the need for more research and help in dealing with the devastating effects of Parkinson's disease; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we designate the month of April of 2011 and 2012 as Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month in the State of Illinois to aid in the fight against Parkinson's disease and its effects on the people of this State and the world at large.
