HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate Beulah E. Posten of
4Chicago on her centennial birthday; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Beulah Esmilda Clark was born on March 8,1922 in
6Colon, Panama; in 1920, at the age of 8, Beulah, along with her
7mother, Lillian, emigrated from Panama to the United States;
8and
 
9    WHEREAS, In Chicago, she married Cornelius Sankey, a
10carpenter who worked on the Panama Canal; he emigrated from
11Panama to the United States a couple of years prior to
12establish a home for Beulah and her mother; and
 
13    WHEREAS, She was educated at Oakland Elementary School and
14Lucy Flowers Technical High School; with the encouragement of a
15mentor, she enrolled in the Nurses Training School at Provident
16Hospital, where she became a certified nurse and worked and
17trained for several years at Provident and Cook County
18Hospitals; she went on to have a successful nursing career at
19the University of Chicago Hospitals, where she was employed for
20over 30 years, serving as head nurse of the Dermatology
21Department and the Eye Clinic; and

1    WHEREAS, She was an active member of the black nursing
2sorority Lambda Pi Alpha, Beta Mu Chapter Chicago; she sought
3citizenship and was naturalized in 1954; and
 
4    WHEREAS, She has been a faithful member of Saint Thaddeus
5Catholic Church in Chicago for over 35 years, where she was
6also a contributing member of the church's Knights of Peter
7Claver Ladies Auxiliary for over 20 years; she also
8participated in the church's choir and outreach ministry; and
 
9    WHEREAS, She was a member of the 71st Street YMCA's Golden
10Agers Social Club; she has a passion for singing, dancing, and
11swimming; she has 2 children, Diane P. Sims and John Jeffrey,
12Jr, and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren;
13therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
16we congratulate Beulah Posten on her 100th birthday and wish
17her good health and happiness for the future; and be it further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to Beulah Posten as a symbol of our respect and
20esteem.
