HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Beulah E. Posten of Chicago on her centennial birthday; and

WHEREAS, Beulah Esmilda Clark was born on March 8,1922 in Colon, Panama; in 1920, at the age of 8, Beulah, along with her mother, Lillian, emigrated from Panama to the United States; and

WHEREAS, In Chicago, she married Cornelius Sankey, a carpenter who worked on the Panama Canal; he emigrated from Panama to the United States a couple of years prior to establish a home for Beulah and her mother; and

WHEREAS, She was educated at Oakland Elementary School and Lucy Flowers Technical High School; with the encouragement of a mentor, she enrolled in the Nurses Training School at Provident Hospital, where she became a certified nurse and worked and trained for several years at Provident and Cook County Hospitals; she went on to have a successful nursing career at the University of Chicago Hospitals, where she was employed for over 30 years, serving as head nurse of the Dermatology Department and the Eye Clinic; and

WHEREAS, She was an active member of the black nursing sorority Lambda Pi Alpha, Beta Mu Chapter Chicago; she sought citizenship and was naturalized in 1954; and

WHEREAS, She has been a faithful member of Saint Thaddeus Catholic Church in Chicago for over 35 years, where she was also a contributing member of the church's Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary for over 20 years; she also participated in the church's choir and outreach ministry; and

WHEREAS, She was a member of the 71st Street YMCA's Golden Agers Social Club; she has a passion for singing, dancing, and swimming; she has 2 children, Diane P. Sims and John Jeffrey, Jr, and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Beulah Posten on her 100th birthday and wish her good health and happiness for the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Beulah Posten as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
