HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate the residents of the Village of Arlington Heights on the occasion of the village's 125th anniversary of incorporation in 2012; and

WHEREAS, The Village of Arlington Heights was incorporated on January 18, 1887 with a population of approximately 1,000 residents; many of the early inhabitants of the Village were farmers, but the village soon became one of the earliest commuter suburbs after the completion of the train depot; and

WHEREAS, The Village of Arlington Heights continued to grow and experienced an increase of residents in the years following the founding of the Arlington Park Race Track after World War II; the 1950's and 1960's were a time of widespread growth due to the expansion of the Chicago-area economy and the increase of automobile sales; and

WHEREAS, Today, the Village of Arlington Heights is the largest community in Chicago's northwest suburbs, with the village's 75,101 residents spread throughout the village's 17 square-mile area; with its excellent access to trains, expressways, and O'Hare International Airport, the village maintains its popularity with commuters; and

WHEREAS, The Village of Arlington Heights is renowned for its outstanding school districts and park district, vibrant cultural scene, progressive village planning, and small town charm; the downtown area is a popular destination where residents and visitors can explore a variety of new additions, including the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre, movie theater, retail shops, and numerous award-winning restaurants; the 5-acre Lake Arlington, golf courses, and neighborhood parks; and

WHEREAS, The Village of Arlington Heights is home to the Arlington Park Race Track, a world-class thoroughbred race track that is home to the "Arlington Million", which features outstanding thoroughbred horses from several continents; and

WHEREAS, The Village of Arlington Heights' Northwest Community Hospital was named one of the 50 best hospitals in the nation for the treatment of cancer and digestive disorders by the U.S. News & World Report; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the residents of the Village of Arlington Heights on the occasion of the village's 125th anniversary of incorporation and wish them continued success and happiness in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be presented to Arlington Heights Mayor Arlene J. Mulder and the Arlington Heights Village Board as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
