HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Even in times of economic stress, we, as citizens of this State, cannot afford to jeopardize the next generation's future by removing university instructors and professors from their students; and

WHEREAS, Putting instructors and professors on furlough is counterproductive as they provide services to the State that cannot be adequately measured; and

WHEREAS, Rationing time for instructors and professors to see their students is unfair both because it diminishes the value of the university's degree and because students pay tuition specifically for access to quality educators; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge Governor Pat Quinn, the Board of Higher Education, and all public universities in this State to do all that is in their power to prevent the furlough of instructors and professors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That public universities in this State should examine their financial ability to implement a tuition waiver program targeted at students coming from the middle-income brackets who are getting left behind in these times of economic hardship, similar to the one proposed for Eastern Illinois University in Senate Bill 1798; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be delivered to Governor Pat Quinn, the Board of Higher Education, and the board of trustees of each public university in this State.
