HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans will present its annual "Dante Award" on May 19, 2011 to Linda Yu, Anchorwoman for ABC Channel 7 in Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Linda Yu joined ABC 7 Chicago in 1984; and in April of 2005 was inducted into the "Silver Circle" of legendary Chicago broadcasters; and

WHEREAS, During her career in Chicago, she has earned 5 local Emmy awards; she recently won an Emmy for her contributions to a primetime special "Chicago's Road to China," exploring the Chicago connections to the growing Asian economy in China; and

WHEREAS, She was also honored with an Emmy for her examination of the aftermath of 9/11; she received the Emmy for Outstanding Achievement with a Regularly Scheduled News Program, Spot Coverage in 1987; in 1982, she won for her coverage of a construction accident in Chicago's Loop; and in 1981, she received an Emmy for her special newscast on the attempted assassination of President Reagan; and

WHEREAS, In 1984, she was honored with a National Gold Medal from the National Conference of Community and Justice for her documentary, "The Scars of Belfast"; and

WHEREAS, Prior to working with ABC 7, she served as the co-anchor for WMAQ-TV from 1980 to 1984; and

WHEREAS, The Dante Award is given by the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans annually; the Joint Civic Committee on Italian Americans is an independent non-profit association dedicated to preserving Italian-American heritage and providing a unified voice for metropolitan Chicago's Italian-American community; the Dante Award is given to a member of the local news media who has answered Dante Alighieri's call to be no timid friend to truth; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Linda Yu on being named the recipient of the 2011 Dante Award, presented by the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans, for her dedication, service, and inspiration in the field of news; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Linda Yu as a symbol our respect and esteem.
