HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are deeply saddened to learn of the death of
4John P. Shonkwiler of Monticello, who passed away on July 18,
52012; and
 
6    WHEREAS, John Shonkwiler was born in Decatur on April 5,
71933, to Robert P. and Mary Dickey Shonkwiler; he graduated
8from Monticello High School in June 1951, the University of
9Illinois in 1955, and Northwestern University School of
10Law-Chicago in June 1962, with a juris doctor; he served in the
11U.S. Navy for 23 years in both active and reserve duty; he
12retired as a captain in Naval intelligence in 1978; and
 
13    WHEREAS, John Shonkwiler worked in his father's law office
14until 1965, when he was appointed magistrate of the Sixth
15Judicial Circuit; he was appointed an associate judge from 1971
16to 1972, a circuit judge by the Supreme Court in 1974, and was
17elected to that office in 1974 by the people of Piatt County;
18he was a judge for 47 years and chief judge of the Sixth
19Judicial Circuit for 18 1/2 years; and
 
20    WHEREAS, John Shonkwiler was a delegate to the National
21Conference of Special Court Judges, chairman for the Judicial
22Conference Committee on Contempt, member of the Illinois State

1Bar Association Assembly, member of the board of directors for
2the Illinois Judges Association, president of the Illinois
3Judges Association, member of the executive committee for the
4Illinois Judicial Conference, and was a member of the Supreme
5Court Committee on Judicial Mentoring; he received a
6commendation from the president of the Illinois Senate for his
7contribution to child support enforcement; and
 
8    WHEREAS, John Shonkwiler was preceded in death by his
9parents, Robert and Mary Shonkwiler and his sister, Suzanne
10Shonkwiler Olds; and
 
11    WHEREAS, John Shonkwiler is survived by his sister, Mary
12Alice (Robert) Strodel; his five nieces and one nephew;
13therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
16we mourn the passing of John Shonkwiler, and we extend our
17sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew
18and loved him; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to his family as an expression of our deepest
21sympathy.
