HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Vernon O.
4Crawley on the occasion of his retirement as President of
5Moraine Valley Community College; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Vernon Crawley earned his bachelor's degree from
7Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia; he
8subsequently earned his master's degree from the University of
9Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia and his doctorate from
10Pennsylvania State University in University Park,
11Pennsylvania; he also studied at the College of William and
12Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and American University in
13Washington, D.C.; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Since 1991, Vernon Crawley has served as President
15of Moraine Valley Community College, a comprehensive community
16college located in the southwest suburbs of Chicago which
17serves over 46,000 students annually; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Prior to his tenure as President of Moraine Valley
19Community College, Vernon Crawley served as President of St.
20Louis Community College at Forest Park for 13 years and as an
21academic dean at Mercer County Community College in Trenton,
22New Jersey; he also served in administrative and teaching

1positions at Dundalk Community College in Baltimore, Maryland,
2Pennsylvania State University, Morgan State University in
3Baltimore, Maryland, and Ruthville High School in Charles City,
4Virginia; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Vernon Crawley served as an administrative
6specialist in science for the National Aeronautics and Space
7Administration in Washington, D.C., developing educational
8materials from space program findings; he also worked as a
9chemist at Stuart Products Company in Richmond, Virginia; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Vernon Crawley serves as a board member on several
11national organizations, including the League for Innovation
12and Community Colleges for International Development, and on
13several local organizations in the Chicago area, including the
14Workforce Investment Board for Cook County, the Economic
15Development Corporation for the Southwest Suburbs, and the
16National Louis University Community College Leadership
17Presidents Advisory Council; he is also a member of the Oak
18Lawn Rotary Club; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Vernon Crawley served as a consultant/evaluator
20for the North Central Association, a regional accrediting
21agency, for over 25 years; he has served on the NCA Review
22Committee and the Institutional Actions Council; he served on
23American Council on Education's Commission on Minorities in

1Higher Education and was a member of the National Advisory
2Group, Expanding Leadership Opportunities for Minorities in
3Community Colleges; he has served on the boards of the Council
4on Higher Education Accreditation, the American Council on
5Education, the President's Round Table, the National Council on
6Black American Affairs, and the Walt Disney World College
7Advisory Committee; he also served a 3-year term on the board
8of the American Association of Community Colleges; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Vernon Crawley has been the recipient of numerous
10honors and awards, including the 2009 ACCT national Marie Y.
11Martin CEO Award, the 2009 ACCT Central Region CEO Award, the
12Pacesetter Award from the National Council on Marketing and
13Public Relations, the Outstanding Leadership Award from the
14National Council on Black American Affairs, the Leadership
15Award from the National Council of Learning Resources, the
16Distinguished Scientist Award from Project SUCCESS/Charles
17City County Public Schools, and most recently, the Eugene
18Simpson Community Leadership Award from the Palos Area Chamber
19of Commerce and the 2012 Phi Theta Kappa Michael Bennett
20Lifetime Achievement Award; therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
22NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
23we congratulate Dr. Vernon O. Crawley on the occasion of his
24retirement, thank him for his many years of dedicated service

1to the people of the State of Illinois, and wish him many happy
2and healthy retirement years; and be it further
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to Vernon Crawley as a symbol of our esteem and
5respect.
