HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Terrence James "T.J." Shirley of Lansing, who passed away on May 6, 2012; and

WHEREAS, He was born October 26, 1958 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Patrick and Caroline Shirley; he graduated from Fennimore High School in 1976 where he had an outstanding athletic career in track and cross country; he graduated from Dubuque University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education in 1981; he was an outstanding track athlete and set many school records; and

WHEREAS, After graduation, he taught at several schools before teaching at Thornridge School District in Dolton; he later became the athletic director and physical education teacher along with coaching multiple sports in the school and community; and

WHEREAS, While teaching and coaching, he earned a Master's Degree in School Administration and a Master's Degree in Physical Education; and

WHEREAS, He was well known for his annual athletic field event known as "Blue Smoke"; and

WHEREAS, Terrence James "T.J." Shirley is survived by his parents, Patrick and Caroline Shirley; his sons, Cameron and Joshua; his daughter, Marissa; his brothers, George and Shaun (Kristie); his sisters, Teresa McElree and Vallerie Lynn; and 20 nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Terrence "T.J." Shirley; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Terrence James "T.J." Shirley as a symbol of our sincere sympathy.
