SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
720 ILCS 5/12-6.5 new

    Amends the Criminal Code of 1961. Creates the offense of extortion. Provides that a person commits the offense when he or she knowingly obtains property from another, with his or her consent, induced by wrongful use of actual or threatened force, violence, or fear, or under color of official right. Establishes penalties based on the value of the property extorted.

1    AN ACT concerning criminal law.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Criminal Code of 1961 is amended by adding
5Section 12-6.5 as follows:
 
6    (720 ILCS 5/12-6.5 new)
7    Sec. 12-6.5. Extortion.
8    (a) A person commits extortion when he or she knowingly
9obtains property from another, with his or her consent, induced
10by wrongful use of actual or threatened force, violence, or
11fear, or under color of official right.
12    (b) Sentence.
13        (1) Extortion involving property not exceeding $300 in
14    value is a Class 4 felony.
15        (2) Extortion involving property exceeding $300 and
16    not exceeding $10,000 in value is a Class 2 felony.
17        (3) Extortion involving property exceeding $10,000 and
18    not exceeding $100,000 in value is a Class 1 felony.
19        (4) Extortion involving property exceeding $100,000 in
20    value is a Class X felony.
