SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
105 ILCS 5/2-3.182 new

    Amends the School Code. Requires the State Board of Education to allow a student who is not a resident of this State to take Illinois Virtual School courses if (i) the student is a dependent of a member of the United States military who has been deployed or transferred to this State after the start of the school year and (ii) the student will be enrolling in a school district in this State in the immediately following school year. Provides that upon enrollment in a school district in this State, the district shall grant the student credit for the completion or partial completion of an Illinois Virtual School course if the course corresponds, as closely as possible, to a course offered by the district and if the student's performance in that course meets district standards. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning education.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section
52-3.182 as follows:
 
6    (105 ILCS 5/2-3.182 new)
7    Sec. 2-3.182. Virtual school program for military
8dependents.
9    (a) Notwithstanding any other rule or law to the contrary,
10the State Board of Education shall allow a student who is not a
11resident of this State to take Illinois Virtual School courses
12if the student meets both of the following qualifications:
13        (1) The student is a dependent of a member of the
14    United States military who has been deployed or transferred
15    to this State after the start of the school year.
16        (2) The student will be enrolling in a school district
17    in this State in the immediately following school year.
18    Upon enrollment in a school district in this State, the
19district shall grant the student credit for the completion or
20partial completion of an Illinois Virtual School course if the
21course corresponds, as closely as possible to, a course offered
22by the district and if the student's performance in that course
23meets district standards.

1    (b) The State Board of Education shall adopt rules to
2implement this Section.
 
3    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
4becoming law.
