SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of James T. Sweeney of Crest Hill, who passed away on February 1, 2010; and

WHEREAS, He was born October 8, 1945, and married Charlene Hanus on August 27, 1977 at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Joliet; he was an avid reader and air show enthusiast; he enjoyed vacationing in the Smoky Mountains and visiting Army, Air Force, and Navy military bases; and

WHEREAS, He was retired from the United States Army, serving in Vietnam from September 28, 1966 thru November 27, 1967; February 16, 1968 thru May 12, 1968; and December 11, 1969 thru November 15, 1970; he also served in Indochina and Korea; he proudly served with the 1st Cavalry Division, 101st Airborne Division, and 1st Aviation Brigade; and

WHEREAS, He was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Silver Service Star; Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, National Defense Service Medal; 3 O/S Bars; Air Medal (5th Award); Aircraft Crewman Badge; Army Commendation Medal; Meritorious Unit Citation; Bronze Star Medal; Good Conduct Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea); Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar (M-16); VSM; NDSM; Air Medal Aircraft Crewman Badge; VCM; 2 O/S Bars; and MM (Rifle M-14); and

WHEREAS, He was employed by Molex as a Quality Assurance Technician and The Labor Record as a Bookkeeper; he was a member of the V.F.W. Cantigny Post 367, 1st Cavalry Division, 101st Airborne Division, Association of the United States Army, and Vietnam Helicopter Crew Members Association; and

WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Dorothy (nee Jay) Sweeney; his sister, Jean Honig; his brother, Henry "Hank" Sweeney; his brothers-in-law, Robert Honig Sr. and Wolfgang "Rick" Short; his nephews, Sean Sweeney and Robert Honig Jr.; his father-in-law Charles Hanus Sr.; and his mother-in-law, Ann Hanus; and

WHEREAS, James T. Sweeney is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Charlene (nee Hanus); his daughter, Jennifer (Michael Yurkovich) Sweeney; his son, James Sweeney Jr.; his beloved canine companions, Tiffany, Dixie, and Tucker; his two sisters, Joyce (Raymond) Matkovic and Mary Ellen Short; his sister-in-law, Mary Jean Sweeney and brother-in-law, Charles (Christina) Hanus Jr.; and numerous nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of James T. Sweeney; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of James T. Sweeney as a symbol of our sincere sympathy.
