SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of William Thomas "Bill" Ames of Barrington,
4 who passed away on May 26, 2009; and
 
5     WHEREAS, He was born July 4, 1925, in Plainfield, New
6 Jersey; he grew up in Niagara Falls, New York, and was the son
7 of Oliver B. and Linda Hill Ames; in his younger days his
8 nickname was Dick, and he had a love for big band music and was
9 an avid saxophone player and had a band of his own; and
 
10     WHEREAS, He served three years in the United States Navy
11 from 1943 to 1946; he sailed on the McCoy Reynolds DE-440 and
12 was part of the crew's Sonar unit; along with his crew members,
13 he helped his ship survive both a typhoon and a kamikaze
14 strike; after graduating with a degree in industrial
15 engineering from the University of Buffalo, he married the love
16 of his life, Evelyn Zobel on July 26, 1952; and
 
17     WHEREAS, He worked in Chicago after moving to Illinois, and
18 walked to the train station every day as part of his commute;
19 he retired from Industrial Risk Insurers in 1987 and remained
20 active in the community; he was a mainstay at the Barrington
21 Historical Society, acting as building and grounds chairman,
22 and taught a safe driving course held in Cuba Township; and

1     WHEREAS, He was a longtime member of the Barrington United
2 Methodist Church, was a choir member for over 40 years, and was
3 also chairman of the Columbarium Committee; he enjoyed home
4 improvements, the beach, skiing, traveling, spending time with
5 his family, dancing, was an avid golfer, and was one who would
6 never pass on seconds of dessert; he was also a longtime
7 precinct captain and former president of the Barrington
8 Township Republican Organization; and
 
9     WHEREAS, William Thomas "Bill" Ames is survived by his wife
10 of 56 years, Evelyn; his two sisters, Helen Glaze and Virginia
11 Crozier; his children, Nancy (Richard) Saxton and Judith
12 (Charles) Wooderson; his grandchildren, Jessica (Thomas)
13 Craven and Eric Saxton; and his many nieces and nephews;
14 therefore, be it
 
15     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
16 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
17 his family and friends, the passing of William Ames; and be it
18 further
 
19     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20 presented to the family of William Ames as a symbol of our
21 sincere sympathy.
